Targeted Fitness Challenge

The UCR Targeted Fitness Challenge is for UCR academic and staff and conducted at the Student Recreation Center. The three-month program consists of cardiovascular, strengthening, stretching and core stabilization exercises.

These individualized exercise programs are intended for employees who perform a variety of physical tasks throughout the day and who may be at higher risk for injury due to the repetition of physical tasks, the force or strain associated with physical tasks, or the awkward positions assumed to carry out their job duties.

The goal of this challenge is to improve an individual’s fitness (strength, endurance flexibility, etc.), which will increase the ability to safely perform the physical demands of their job duties and thereby reduce their risk of injury.

The process:

  • Employees are assessed by a fitness professional, using standardized fitness testing protocols
  • The fitness assessment scores determine physical impairments (decreased strength, decreased flexibility, etc.)
  • Exercise sessions are conducted at the Recreation Center 3 days/week
  • The physical impairments are analyzed in conjunction with the critical demands of the job to help identify risk and determine the exercise prescription and program goals
  • Each participant is re-assessed upon completion of the program (3 months) to determine fitness improvements and injury risk reduction

All exercise sessions are conducted outside of normal work hours.
