Who We Are banner

Goals/Objectives

  • Create a healthy, safe, and clean physical environment that supports health and well-being throughout the UCR Campus.
  • Improve the built environment on and around the campus as a means of creating a community that fosters “health by default.” The emphasis is on structural changes that naturally lead to healthier behaviors.

Project Banner

  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to recommend and create best practices for healthy design standards and guidelines that support a healthy campus environment.
  • Improve and enhance Stairwells with signage and beautification projects.

Take the Stairs

Take the Stairs Campaign

The Take the Stairs Campaign is part of the systemwide Healthy Campus Network (HCN) which aims to make the healthy choice the easy choice through the creation of social conditions that nurture healthy and productive behaviors, healthy work and academic environments, and culture change. One aspect of the UC HCN is launching a stairwell campaign with the goal of supporting a more physically active culture through transforming the environment to better support activity throughout our campuses.

The stairwells in Surge and Olmstead have been cleaned and painted to make them more attractive and accessible for use. Promotional signage has been installed to encourage and motivate stair usage for those that are able to use the stairs. There are many benefits to taking the stairs such as improved health, saves time and is more environment-friendly. For those that are not able or choose not to take the stairs, healthy tips are provided inside the elevators.

Stop by the campaign launch to meet our Healthy Campus Champions, Ron Coley, Vice Chancellor of Business and Administrative Services (BAS) and Deborah Deas, Dean, School of Medicine (SOM); kick off with a walk up the stairs and learn more about UCR HCI and how your building can participate in the Take the Stairs initiative. Selfies and photos are highly encouraged. Scotty the Bear will make a guest appearance!

You can also visit Olmstead – stairwell #4 to see more of the Take the Stairs promotional messages.
